To my friends and family, though, there's no hyphen. people think it needs to be qualified by something else. I guess that's what happens when you're the first at something. Obviously, I'm not the first stand-up comic in the world, but I know that I'm the first stand-up who looks like me, and the first to have done some of the things I've done. There's always that hyphen: South-Asian comic, Indo-Canadian comic, South-Asian-Canadian comic, Canadian-born-Indian comic, Brampton-raised stand-up comic. No matter how people describe me, there's always something before my name or my profession.
