It’s easy to see why they did what they did from their own stories, but as we see them through Avery, we don’t learn this until later.Īs mentioned, witchcraft requires a lot of pain. We are quick to assign good/evil titles to them, but they are both such greyscale characters. Oh the heartbreak.Īvery’s mum and grandma couldn’t be more different if they tried – although both are family and have a need to protect and teach Avery, they went about it in completely different ways. His passion and determination are well matched for Avery and the heartbreak. The concept of inking protective (and other forms of magic) spells on to the skin to personalise and solidify magic was unique and super interesting. Tane was another interesting character – his magical tattoos and mysterious culture were fascinating and seemed to draw a lot of parallels with other modern indigenous peoples. Her interactions with Tane really highlighted her whole emotional arc. I liked Avery a lot – her determination and stubbornness really shone through her actions and the storytelling.

The story never fully went where I expected it to go, which was good! There were unique features and the writing kept the storyline interesting. The whole ‘magic never works the way you want’ thing was a little poor when you could do so much…more? I’m still not entirely sure of my feelings. The making and peddling of wee charms was so not what I had envisaged and seemed a little, I don’t know – insignificant? unnecessary? understandable? given the pain that witchcraft, magic and spells clearly require in this story. It was something totally different from the typical ‘sea witch’ story that I was expecting and that I had imagined, but I guess Avery does display that level of power at one point. I mostly enjoyed this story – I thought the premise was interesting and was intrigued by the Roe witches. I loved that a book box was including a good range of books, rather than just new releases! Unfortunately, the Book Spot Box is now closed but I am grateful to them for introducing this read to me. Hello friends! Now this is quite an old release, though it was one I had never heard of and was only introduced to through the Book Spot Box, as this was the featured book in April (I believe).
